Equine Facilitated Learning
Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL) is about connecting with donkeys to learn about ourselves. The learning approach involves partnering with the donkey, through ground based activities, to support the development of new skills and build on existing skills. Through the child and donkey interactions, EFL can promote a greater sense of self awareness and enhance emotional wellbeing as well as many other life skills such as; communication, trust, empathy and the ability to emotionally regulate. EFL will support the child to overcome challenges, build resilience and develop confidence.
Equine Facilitated Learning is beneficial for all; and individuals facing various challenges. This includes; children with special educational needs such as Autism and ADHD, children with anxiety, low mood and poor self esteem, those who struggle to self regulate and have sensory processing difficulties, children who have encountered a bereavement and children experiencing emotionally based school avoidance (EBSA).

Why Donkeys?
Donkeys react positively to human contact and seek out interactions. They are calm, sociable, and gentle in nature. Donkeys are inquisitive, intelligent and like to learn new things; developing strong bonds with people around them. They have a strong sense of loyalty and friendship similar to humans.
EFL sessions can help create a calm and grounded environment. Donkeys naturally promote calmness, which can be grounding for children who might be feeling overwhelmed, anxious or experiencing big feelings. Spending time grooming, walking or simply being with a donkey can offer children a peaceful respite from their busy everyday lives, helping them self-regulate and manage their emotions. Successful interactions with a donkey can boost confidence and self-esteem, which reminds the child of their capabilities and worth.

Our bespoke 1:1 sessions can cater for the individual who may have their own goals or may have established goals outlined in their education, health and care plan (EHCP) or Education Plan for Previously Looked After Children (EPPLAC) or Personal Education Plan (PEP). We aim to achieve specific outcomes related to these goals. We will collaborate with the child, parent/carer, and other professionals to provide a highly effective service that addresses the unique requirements and needs of the child.

Our 1:1 sessions can also cover a more overall wellbeing focus, without the specific goals or outcomes, but concentrates on the positive state of mind and body to promote self care. Being at The Donkey Den involves; connecting with others, being physically active, learning new skills and paying attention to the present moment as suggested by the NHS to improve mental health and wellbeing.
